Lesson 1 Matthew

Lesson 1 – A Royal Pedigree Matthew 1 Here we go! Who is Jesus? Does it matter? To answer this last question, we will find in lesson 16 of this study how Jesus Himself asked this question of the men who had been following Him for almost 3 years. The entire Bible centers around this question – the Old Testament books concentrate on preparing people to meet Him in person, the first four books of the New Testament show us His life here on earth – each proving a different part of who He was. John proves to us that Jesus is God. Luke proves that He was truly a man while on earth. Mark proves that His purpose for coming was to be a servant to God for bringing salvation to mankind. And Matthew proves His position as the promised King with the authority to do everything He came to do. To be a king, a man has to do one of two things – either be born to the right family, or conquer the current ruler. In this first chapter of Matthew, we are shown how Jesus was born of the right family, with all ...

Genesis Lesson 26

Lesson 26 - Joseph's Final Years: Faith, Love and Hope Read Genesis 50  Like a fine painting or sculpture, God's work takes time, but its beauty is a tribute to the artist. The previous studies have shown how God used the years of hardship and suffering to produce in Joseph a spiritual maturity unsurpassed in the Old Testament. In this final chapter of Genesis we see how Joseph's life reflects the character of God. He provides a model for the way we should relate to God and others.

Genesis Lesson 25

Lesson 25 - Jacob's Blessing: The Life of Faith Our self-centered technological world seeks instant gratification and immediate results. The good life shown on television is measured by what we have and use now. The elderly are usually considered unneeded rather than examples of how to live fully for the long run. But for those with eyes to see, Jacob can teach us valuable lessons about the satisfaction of persevering in the life of faith. This study views his final days as he evaluates the past and peers into the future.

This study shows how the seemingly unrelated and perplexing events of the preceding chapters now serve God's purpose to preserve Jacob's family during the coming famine. This account can strengthen our faith and hope as we work through difficult situations we cannot understand.

Genesis Lesson 20

Lesson 20 – Joseph and his Brothers: Pride and Prejudice Read Genesis 37-38  We often see how children tend to mirror the weaknesses as well as the strengths of their parents. This is evident in many families of the Old Testament. Jacob suffered from parental favoritism as a boy. Now we see how he continues this practice in his relationship with Joseph—with bad results.

Genesis Lesson 19

Lesson 19 - Jacob's Compromise and Commitment: The Cost of Discipleship Read Genesis 34 In the end of the last chapter Jacob bought a plot of land in Shechem among the Canaanites instead of going on to Bethel as God commanded. Now we see how compromise with worldly things brings disgrace and tragedy to Jacob’s family.

Genesis Lesson 18

Lesson 18 - Jacob Meets Esau: Planning, Prayer and Struggle Read Genesis 32-33  The previous study ended with reconciliation and peaceful departure. Now Jacob resolutely heads toward another confrontation with his adversary of twenty years earlier—his brother Esau, whom he cheated. Jacob combines planning and prayer as he obeys God's command to return to his country and relatives. His struggle can teach us how to resolve past wrongs and win reconciliation with someone we have injured.

Genesis Lesson 12

Lesson 12 - Political & Family Crises: The Consequences of Unbelief Read Genesis 20-21  *Have you ever gotten into trouble because you didn't trust God to take care of you? Did you take matters into your own hands and in the process cut some moral or ethical corners? What happened? In the last lesson we saw Abraham at his best, living in faith in God and praying according to God’s will. In this lesson we see something we need to learn to recognize in our own lives – the attack of Satan when our faith begins to grow! Abraham had surely watched the destruction of the cities from a safe lookout. Almost as surely, he had seen Lot and his family leave, and had probably sent someone to them with food and clothing and whatever else they needed just to survive in the caves for a few days. Then Satan attacked. We would think that Abraham, after all he had seen God do, would have no doubts at all about God’s ability to protect him. How often do we expect this of ourselves when we ...

James 10

Lesson 10: Faith that is real James 2:14-17  14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

A shield is something that is moved as needed to block incoming weapons. It is attached to us but remains movable.

Lesson 11 Genesis

Lesson 11 - Sodom and Gomorrah: God's Judgment on Society Read Genesis 18-19 In chapters 18-19 of Genesis we see two very interesting things in Abraham’s life. First, we see God’s faithfulness to His promises as He restates His promise to Abraham and Sarah that they will have a child even though they are now both nearly 100 years old. God keeps His promises even when things seem humanly impossible to make that happen.
