Ecclesiastes 7:16-18

 Ecclesiastes 7:16-18 (NIV) 

advises against extreme, self-righteous legalism ("overrighteous") and excessive folly ("overwicked"), urging a balanced life through the fear of God. It warns that rigid, self-imposed perfectionism can destroy a person, while also condemning sinful recklessness, urging instead a middle path of practical wisdom. 

  • Do Not Be Overrighteous/Overwise (v. 16): This warns against rigid, self-righteous, or "super-spiritual" behavior that acts as if one can force God’s hand through human effort, leading to a cheerless life and spiritual destruction.
  • Do Not Be Overwicked/Fool (v. 17): This cautions against total abandonment to sinful, reckless living, which brings premature destruction and judgment.
  • The Balance (v. 18): "Whoever fears God will avoid all extremes." The remedy for both extremes is a humble, God-centered life that avoids the arrogance of self-righteousness and the destruction of foolishness. 
In essence, these verses promote a humble, balanced, and practical approach to life, recognizing that no one is perfectly righteous and that the fear of God is the best guide.
