Jehu tricky letters

 

Jehu used cunning, manipulative letters to orchestrate the mass killing of King Ahab’s seventy sons and extended family, fulfilling divine prophecy against Ahab's house

. 

The Strategy of the Letters (2 Kings 10)
  • The First Letter: After seizing power and killing King Joram (Ahab's son), Jehu sent letters to the leaders of Samaria, where Ahab’s 70 descendants were being raised. He cynically challenged them to pick the best of Ahab's sons, place him on the throne, and fight for the dynasty, despite knowing they were terrified of his power.
  • The Reaction: The leaders, terrified that they could not stand against Jehu, surrendered immediately and pledged allegiance to him.
  • The Second Letter: Jehu then demanded proof of their loyalty: "bring the heads of your master's sons to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow".
  • The Execution: The leaders complied, slaughtering all 70 descendants and sending their heads in baskets.
  • The Justification: Jehu piled the heads at the city gate to demonstrate that he was fulfilling the word of the Lord spoken through Elijah against Ahab’s lineage. 
Following this, Jehu continued to eliminate every remaining member of Ahab's family, officials, and priests in Jezreel and Samaria.
