The Christian calendar, which starts with year 1 AD, was set centuries later and doesn't precisely align with these historical estimates, placing Jesus' birth a few years earlier.

• King Herod's Reign: The Gospel of Matthew states Jesus was born towards the end of Herod the Great's rule, and historians place Herod's death in 4 BC, making Jesus' birth sometime before that.
• Quirinius' Census: The Gospel of Luke mentions a census under Quirinius, governor of Syria, but dating this census is complex, with some estimates placing it around 8 BC, further supporting a birth before 4 BC.
• "About 30 years old": Luke says Jesus was "about 30" when he began his ministry around 26 AD (15th year of Tiberius), which, if true, also points to a birth around 4-6 BC.
