Joab against David

 

"Joab against David" refers to 

the complex, strained relationship between King David and his commander-in-chief, Joab, characterized by Joab’s occasional, ruthless insubordination despite his general loyalty to the throne. While Joab served David for 40 years, he often defied direct orders to protect his own position, secure the kingdom, or act on personal vendettas. 

Here are the key instances where Joab went "against" David:
  • Killing Absalom (2 Samuel 18): Despite David's explicit command to spare his rebellious son Absalom, Joab killed him when he found him defenseless in a tree, believing it was necessary for the safety of the kingdom.
  • Rebuking the King (2 Samuel 19): After Absalom’s death, Joab sternly rebuked David for openly grieving for his son rather than honoring the soldiers who had just saved the king’s life, forcing David to appear in public.
  • Murdering Rivals (2 Samuel 3 & 20): Joab murdered Abner and later Amasa—men David had either aligned with or appointed—because they were threats to his, Joab's, position as commander. David viewed this as "shedding blood in peacetime".
  • Resisting the Census (2 Samuel 24): Joab opposed David’s pride-driven decision to take a census, arguing against it before reluctantly obeying.
  • Supporting Adonijah (1 Kings 1): Near the end of David's reign, Joab broke his long loyalty to David by supporting Adonijah as the next king, rather than Solomon, whom David had chosen. 
What it means:
The actions of Joab against David symbolize the tension between pragmatic, ruthless power (Joab) and personal, sometimes flawed judgment (David). While Joab was fiercely loyal to the survival of David's kingdom, he often acted against David's personal wishes or morality, causing David to feel powerless against him. Consequently, David ordered his son, Solomon, to execute Joab to cleanse the kingdom of his violence.

Joab was a bloodthirsty murderer; quite different from king David. In fact, due to his many unnecessary killings, 

David commanded, Now you yourself know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me- what he did to the two commanders of Israel's armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether.
