Joab and Amasa

 Joab and Amasa were cousin generals and rivals in King David's army, with Joab brutally murdering Amasa to regain his position as commander. After Amasa led forces for the rebel Absalom, David appointed him over Joab, but Amasa's failure to mobilize troops quickly prompted Joab to kill him under the guise of a greeting in 2 Samuel 20.

  • Relationship: They were cousins, both nephews of King David (Joab’s mother was Zeruiah, Amasa’s was Abigail).
  • The Rivalry: After Absalom’s rebellion, David appointed Amasa as commander of the army, replacing Joab. This was a move to reconcile with the tribe of Judah.
  • The Murder: Joab, deemed "imperious" and "revengeful," saw Amasa as a threat to his power and a traitor. While pursuing the rebel Sheba, Joab met Amasa, greeted him with a kiss, but struck him in the abdomen with a sword, killing him instantly.
  • Aftermath: Following the murder, Joab resumed command and continued the campaign against Sheba. This act was one of the crimes for which Joab was later held accountable, with David charging Solomon to ensure Joab did not die in peace.
