- Origin: Jonah son of Amittai was from Gath-hepher in Galilee, a region in the northern kingdom.
- Time Period: He was a contemporary of the prophets Amos and Hosea, operating shortly before Assyria’s final captivity of the Northern Kingdom.
- Prophecy in Israel: Before his famous mission to Nineveh, Jonah predicted that King Jeroboam II would restore Israel’s borders from the entrance of Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah (2 Kings 14:25). This was an act of grace to a rebellious nation.
The Mission to Nineveh
- Commission: God sent Jonah to preach against Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire, which was known for its extreme brutality.
- The Flight: Jonah initially fled to Tarshish in the opposite direction (towards modern-day Spain) to avoid this command.
- The Message: After being swallowed by a great fish and returned to land, Jonah obeyed and preached a message of judgment: "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown".
