Joseph hykos pharaoh?

Joseph's story

in the Bible is often linked to Egypt's Second Intermediate Period (c. 1630-1523 BCE), the era when the Hyksos (Canaanite rulers) controlled Lower Egypt, as it provides a plausible timeframe for a Canaanite rising to high power in Egypt, though some scholars place him earlier during the prosperous Middle Kingdom, with debates ongoing about his specific era and the nature of Hyksos rule. While no direct Egyptian records confirm Joseph, the Hyksos period (c. 1650-1550 BCE) offers a historical backdrop for a Semitic leader's prominence, aligning with his biblical role, but many scholars argue he fits better in the preceding Middle Kingdom under dynasties like the 12th.

Arguments for the Hyksos Period (Second Intermediate Period):
  • Canaanite Rulers: The Hyksos themselves were West Asian (Canaanite) rulers of northern Egypt, making it plausible for a figure like Joseph to gain power.
  • Political Opportunity: This period saw foreign influence, providing a possible context for Joseph's rise as vizier.
Arguments Against the Hyksos Period (Favoring Middle Kingdom):
  • Biblical Chronology: Some interpretations place Joseph's life (dying around 1805 BCE) earlier, during the Middle Kingdom (e.g., under Sesostris III or Amenemhet III), a time of unified Egyptian strength, notes BibleWise.
  • Goshen Location: The Bible's description of the family settling in Goshen might fit better before the major Hyksos upheaval in the Delta, argues Medium.
Scholarly Views:
  • Middle Kingdom Dating: Many scholars place Joseph within the Middle Kingdom (c. 2000-1786 BCE) or its transition, aligning with a prosperous Egypt.
  • Hyksos as a "Gradual Influx": Recent archaeology suggests the Hyksos rise was a gradual cultural settlement, not just a violent takeover, making blended communities common, notes NIH and YouTube.
In essence, while the Hyksos era offers a tempting historical parallel for Joseph's rise, many biblical scholars suggest a date within the powerful Middle Kingdom, highlighting the ongoing debate.
