Micah and Micaiah

 

Micah and Micaiah are often considered different forms of the same Hebrew name, meaning "who is like Yahweh?"

. Micah (מִיכָה) is the shortened form used for the 8th-century prophet and others, while Micaiah (מִיכָיָהוּ) is the longer, full form. They are distinct individuals, separated by about 130 years in the Bible.

• Definition & Origin: Both names share the same etymological root, roughly translating to "Who is like Jehovah?".
• Prophet Micah (Book of Micah): He was a 7th-century BC prophet from Moresheth-Gath, a contemporary of Isaiah and Hosea, known for advocating for the poor. His name is shortened from the fuller Micaiah.
• Prophet Micaiah (1 Kings 22): A distinct prophet who lived earlier, during the reign of King Ahab and Jehoshaphat. He is known for warning King Ahab against going to battle.
• Biblical Usage: Micaiah is the fuller form, which can appear as Micayahu, while Micah is the shortened version. In some cases, the same individual is referred to with both names, such as the prophet in 1 Kings 22:8 being called Micaiah and in 2 Chronicles 18:14 as Micah.
• Other Figures: Both names were used for multiple people in the Old Testament, including women.
