Northern part and Assyrian
The Assyrian Empire ruled the northern part of Israel (the Kingdom of Israel or Samaria) for approximately
100 to 125 years, from their initial, significant territorial conquests in the 740s–730s BCE until the collapse of the Assyrian Empire around 609 BCE.
Key details regarding this period of rule include:
- Initial Conquest (c. 734–732 BCE): Tiglath-Pileser III invaded, conquering Galilee and Transjordan (the northern and eastern parts of the kingdom).
- Fall of Samaria (722–720 BCE): Shalmaneser V and Sargon II completed the conquest, destroying the capital of Samaria and deporting the population.
- Duration of Direct Rule: Following the final fall in 722/720 BCE, the region was converted into Assyrian provinces (Magiddû and Samerina).
- End of Rule (c. 609 BCE): Assyrian dominance in the region lasted until the empire collapsed, with Babylonian and Median forces taking over the territory.
