Abraham and Trinity

In Genesis 18, Abraham welcomes three mysterious visitors at the oaks of Mamre, an encounter often interpreted as a theophany (a physical manifestation of God) or a foreshadowing of the Trinity. While the text identifies them as "three men" and later implies they are the Lord (YHWH) and two angels, Christian tradition often views them as a representation of the Trinity. 

Key Aspects of the Encounter:

• The Visitation: Abraham, showing great hospitality, bows to the three men who come to his tent.
• The Message: One of the visitors (referred to as the Lord/Yahweh) prophesies that Sarah will bear a son in her old age.
• The Interpretation: While some theologians strictly interpret the visitors as one Lord and two angels (Gen 18, 19), others, particularly in Eastern Orthodox tradition, view the scene as an iconographic representation of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
• The Dialogue: The men speak with a unified voice, but the text specifically distinguishes the Lord as the one interacting with Abraham regarding the fate of Sodom.
• The Icon: The famous icon of the "Hospitality of Abraham" by Andrei Rublev is a widely recognized depiction of this event, symbolizing the Trinity. 

The narrative emphasizes God’s personal interaction with Abraham and a dramatic announcement of the fulfillment of his promise.
