God’s seed of promises is not Ishmael

Because God chose the descendants of Isaac not Ishmael

According to biblical scripture, 

God's covenantal seed, through which the promised land and the Messiah (Jesus) came, is established exclusively through Isaac, not Ishmael. While God blessed Ishmael as a son of Abraham and made him a great nation, the covenant promises were explicitly designated for Isaac, the son of promise born to Sarah.

• The Covenant Promise: God clarified that the covenant was not with Ishmael, stating in Genesis 17:21, "My covenant I will establish with Isaac".
• Seed of Promise vs. Flesh: Isaac represents the child of promise, while Ishmael is described as being born of "the flesh".
• Inheritance: Ishmael did not inherit the covenant promises or the specific land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
• Blessing on Ishmael: Although not part of the covenant, Ishmael was still favored by God, receiving a blessing to become a great nation and, like all, can share in spiritual blessings through faith. 

Contextual Understanding:

• Sarah’s Role: Ishmael was born to Hagar, Sarah’s maid, as an attempt to fulfill God’s promise through human effort.
• Symbolism: In Pauline theology, this distinction represents the difference between slavery/bondage (Hagar/Ishmael) and freedom/promise (Sarah/Isaac). 

Therefore, the theological, covenantal line of promise focuses on the descendants of Isaac, ultimately leading to Jesus Christ. 

In Biblical narrative, God did not completely reject Ishmael but distinguished his purpose from the covenant line. While Genesis 17:19-21 designates Isaac as the child of promise, God promised to bless Ishmael, making him a great nation of 12 princes because he was Abraham's seed. 

Key Details on Ishmael's Status:

• Not the Covenant Heir: Judaism and Christianity hold that God's covenant was passed through Isaac, not Ishmael, who was the son of the bondwoman.
• Divine Protection and Blessing: God heard Ishmael in the wilderness, promised to make him a great nation, and protected him.
• Prophetic Character: Genesis 16:12 describes Ishmael's descendants as living in, or in conflict with, their brothers ("a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone").
• Islamic View: In contrast to the Biblical focus, Islamic tradition regards Ishmael as a righteous prophet who helped build the Kaaba with Abraham. 

Therefore, while Ishmael was excluded from the specific covenantal promise given to Isaac, he was not abandoned but blessed with prosperity and a vast lineage.
