Surah Al-An'am ayat 103 (6:103)

expressly forbids trying to imagine or define the internal Essence (Zat) of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said:
"Reflect upon the creation of Allah, but do not reflect upon the essence of the Creator, for you cannot possibly comprehend His magnitude".
Trying to imagine what Allah looks like or trying to define His essence is prohibited because any mental picture formed by the human mind is inherently limited and would resemble creation, not the Creator.
2. The Quranic Description of God
Instead of describing His Essence, the Quran teaches about God through His Names and Attributes, affirming His uniqueness and majesty:
- Absolute Transcendence: "There is nothing like unto Him" (Quran 42:11).
- The Absolute (Al-Samad): Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) is considered the core of this understanding, stating He is One, self-sufficient, begets not, nor was He begotten, and has no equal.
- Beyond Human Perception: "Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision" (Quran 6:103).
- Unknowable Depth: Allah cannot be contained in imagination, and no one can comprehend the "how" of His Essence.
3. How to Know God (Attributes vs. Essence)
Islam urges Muslims to know God through:
- His Attributes (Sifat): Such as the Merciful (Ar-Rahman), the All-Knowing (Al-Alim), the All-Powerful (Al-Qadir).
- His Creation (Ayat): The heavens, the earth, the human body, and nature are considered signs (Ayat) that point to the Creator's power and wisdom, without being the Creator Himself.
4. Why Reflection on the Essence is Forbidden
- Intellectual Limitation: The human intellect is designed to understand things that have form, location, and dimensions. Since God is not a physical body and is not constrained by space or time, the mind cannot truly grasp Him.
- Risk of Misguidance: Trying to figure out the "how" of God's essence can lead to doubts, misconceptions, or false, anthropomorphic images.
In conclusion: The Quranic approach is to accept God's existence and greatness (Tawhid) through His signs, believe in His attributes, and accept that His Essence is beyond human capacity to comprehend.
