Nadab and Abihu

Nadab and Abihu, the eldest sons of Aaron and Elisheba, are first mentioned in

Exodus 6:23. They are listed among the sons of Aaron, alongside Eleazar and Ithamar. They later appear in Exodus 24:1, 9, where they are privileged to accompany Moses and Aaron up Mount Sinai to witness a vision of God.

Key details about them include:
  • Priestly Ordination: They were ordained as priests to serve alongside their father (Exodus 28:1).
  • Unauthorized Fire: They are best known for offering "unauthorized" or "strange" fire in the tabernacle, contrary to God's command (Leviticus 10:1-2).
  • Death: As a result of their disobedience, they were consumed by fire from the LORD.
  • Legacy: 1 Chronicles 24:2 confirms they died before having children, ending their line.
