Nathan Prophet First Appearances

The prophet Nathan first appears in the biblical narrative in 2 Samuel 7:2 (and concurrently in 1 Chronicles 17:1), where he serves as a trusted advisor and prophet to King David. He initially supports David's desire to build a temple but, after receiving a message from God, returns to inform David that his son, not David himself, will build the temple, and that God will establish David's dynasty forever. 

Key Details of Nathan's First Appearance:

• Context: David has secured his kingdom and wishes to build a permanent house (temple) for the Ark of God, which was previously housed in a tent.
• The Message: Initially, Nathan encourages David to follow his heart, but that night, God gives Nathan a message (the "Nathan Oracle") to correct this course.
• The Covenant: Instead of David building a house for God, Nathan tells David that God will build a "house" (a dynasty) for David, promising that his throne will endure forever.
• Role: This introduction establishes Nathan as a key prophet in David's court, capable of delivering both favorable promises and, as seen later in 2 Samuel 12 with Bathsheba, direct, challenging rebukes.
