Old Testament to New Testament

 Luke 16:19

Luke 16:16 states, "
The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it" (NIV/ESV). It marks a transition in salvation history from the Old Testament era to the new era of the gospel inaugurated by Jesus.
Key Interpretations:
  • A New Era: The "Law and Prophets" (Old Testament) were the primary guide until John the Baptist, after which the gospel of the Kingdom of God became the focus.
  • The Kingdom is Here: Jesus emphasizes that the kingdom is now accessible, and many are urgently seeking to enter it.
  • "Forcing" or "Pressing": The phrase "everyone is forcing their way into it" (or "pressing into it") suggests that entering the kingdom requires earnest effort, urgency, and intensity, rather than a passive approach.
  • Context: This verse follows a discussion about the Pharisees' love of money and precedes teaching on the permanence of the Law (16:17) and marriage (16:18).
Note: The phrase can also be interpreted as the kingdom "forcefully advancing" or being subjected to violent opposition.
