More than You Can Bear
It is completely understandable to feel overwhelmed and to question that promise when you are in the middle of a storm that feels like it is crushing you.
The phrase "I will not give you more than you can bear" is often cited to bring comfort, but it is frequently misunderstood. Based on the biblical context of 1 Corinthians 10:13, the promise is often interpreted not as "you will never have a problem too big for you," but rather that you will never be tempted beyond your ability to endure, and that a way out will be provided.
Here is why it may feel like you cannot bear this, and what the promise actually means in times of deep suffering:
1. It is More Than You Can Handle (On Purpose)
The goal of extreme trials is often to reach the end of your own strength so you stop relying on yourself and start relying on God. Paul, in the Bible, spoke of being "crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure" (2 Corinthians 1:8). The goal was that they would not rely on themselves, but on God.
- Perspective Shift: It is not that the situation is bearable for you; it is that it is bearable through Him.
2. The "Way Out" is Often Surrender
The promise includes that God "will also provide a way out so that you can endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). The "way out" often isn't the removal of the problem, but a way through it by casting all your care upon Him because He cares for you.
- The Struggle: You may feel you cannot bear it because you are still trying to hold and carry it yourself, rather than handing it over.
3. Suffering Refines and Prepares You
Suffering is often described as a "crucible" or "refiner's fire" that strengthens character and faith. It is often used to:
- Build endurance: Teaching you to rely on Him.
- Deepen reliance: Forcing you to cling to God as your rock.
- Purpose: Preparing you for an "eternal weight of glory".
4. It Is Okay to Be Broken
Feeling like you cannot bear it is not a sign of failure. It is a sign that you are human. The promise is not that you will feel strong, but that you will be sustained. In your weakest moments, you can be lifted by the consolation of the Spirit.
