Goodness

 Hi Dini,

Two comments on your excellent remarks. First, people do tend to think that there is some amount of goodness that will get them into heaven. They don’t know what that amount is, but they see that they are better than the swindlers, murderers and rapists, so they figure they are ok. People want to put in a third category: “not too bad,” “pretty good”, “above average.” God has no such category. His categories are: good, evil and saved, lost. My brother is smart and hardworking and thinks he is fit for God’s approval. I asked him one day if he had ever studied the wrong thing in college. He thought the professor would test on one thing, but he chose another topic for which my brother was unprepared. Most everyone has had this happen. He said that he had indeed done that. I said that God is like that. He has only one question on your entrance exam to heaven. “What have you done with Jesus?” It is simply a pass/fail situation.

Second, you are absolutely correct in saying that apart from God’s grace and mercy there is no goodness on earth. James 1:17 “Everything good comes from God. Every perfect gift is from him.”

It is sobering to think that there will be no love or goodness in hell because God will not be there. People have no idea.

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
